WHY AN AI INDEX, AND WHY NOW

Most AI benchmarks are vendor surveys dressed as research. They oversample happy customers, under-disclose methodology, and return scores that flatter the sponsor.

The NUUN AI Index is different on three counts. The instrument is public. The sample frame is published. Scoring is run by two independent reviewers using the same rubric applied to every organization — including NUUN Digital.

THE FIVE DIMENSIONS

  1. Strategy (20%) — documented AI roadmap, named executive sponsor, measurable business objectives tied to AI programs, board-level reporting.
  2. Data foundation (20%) — data architecture, data quality program, unified customer and product data, data-governance framework (DAMA-DMBOK aligned).
  3. Talent and operating model (20%) — ML/AI engineering bench, prompt-engineering literacy at business-user tier, cross-functional operating model, budget and hiring trajectory.
  4. Governance (20%) — responsible-AI framework (NIST AI RMF and/or ISO/IEC 42001 aligned), risk register, policy-and-review cadence, model inventory and monitoring.
  5. Production deployment (20%) — number of AI systems in production with named business owner, MLOps maturity, evaluation discipline (offline + online), incident response.

2026 HEADLINE FINDINGS

Global mean: 52/100. The median organization has an AI strategy on paper but weak production discipline.

Leader cluster (top decile): 78+. Leaders are distinguished less by flashier models than by data foundation and governance maturity.

The governance gap. Governance is the lowest-scoring dimension across the sample (mean 9.4/20). Only 18% of organizations have a formal responsible-AI framework mapped to NIST AI RMF or ISO/IEC 42001.

The production gap. 61% of organizations report at least one generative-AI pilot. Only 23% have three or more generative-AI systems in production with a named business owner and documented evaluation cadence. Pilots are easy; production is where the index separates.

Regional variance. North American enterprises score 4.7 points higher on average than MENA enterprises, driven primarily by data-foundation maturity. MENA outpaces North America on executive AI sponsorship (strategy dimension) — a finding that surprised us and replicated across retests.

FIVE PATTERNS FROM THE LEADERS

1. Data before models. Leaders invested in data architecture and quality before they scaled AI. The payoff is compounding — every subsequent AI system is cheaper and safer because the data spine is clean.

2. Governance is a moat, not a brake. Leaders with mature responsible-AI frameworks ship more AI, not less, because they can say yes to risky use cases with confidence.

3. Named business owners on every system. Leader organizations name a business owner for every production AI system. "IT owns it" is a nascent-band answer.

4. Evaluation cadence as culture. Leaders treat offline and online evaluation as table stakes — automated test suites, A/B or shadow deployments, regression dashboards.

5. Generative AI plus classical ML. Leaders have not abandoned classical ML for generative. Classical models (prediction, classification, optimization) remain the workhorse; generative is additive.

Sample frame. 312 organizations across Canada (n=128), United States (n=104), and MENA (n=80). Sampling targeted mid-market and enterprise (>250 employees). Sectors distributed across financial services, CPG, health, tech, retail, energy, and public sector.

Field period. November 2025 – March 2026.

Scorer calibration. Two senior reviewers per organization; third reviewer adjudicated disagreements > 4 points on any dimension.

NUUN Digital inclusion. NUUN was scored under the same instrument by two external reviewers under NDA. Score published in the Leader band; scorecard available on request.

Limitations. Self-disclosed production metrics partially verifiable; we cross-checked where public evidence allowed. Sample skews toward organizations willing to disclose — likely a modest upward bias on the headline mean.
