Generative engine optimization (GEO) is the practice of structuring content so large language models cite your brand when users ask category questions. The 2026 playbook has five moves — citation-worthy content (stats, methodology, named experts), extractable structure (short sections, FAQ schema), freshness signals (dateModified, quarterly refresh), authority signals (sources, credentials, third-party references), and measurement (share-of-model across ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot monthly). GEO complements SEO rather than replacing it.

Five moves that actually move share-of-model

1. Citation-worthy content. Every long-form page needs at least one proprietary statistic, a named methodology, or a first-party dataset. AI engines strongly prefer content that says something new — content that merely summarizes existing sources gets cited as a second-order reference, if at all.

2. Extractable structure. Short paragraphs (2–3 sentences), descriptive H2/H3 hierarchy, FAQ sections with exact-match question phrasing, comparison tables, and definition blocks. LLMs extract from structure; walls of prose get skipped.

3. Freshness signals. Every page carries a Last updated: [Month YYYY] timestamp, every schema emitter sets dateModified, and a quarterly content refresh cycle is funded. Stale pages lose citation share even when they're still ranking organically.

4. Authority signals. Author name, credentials, byline, sources cited inline, and a "Sources & further reading" section at the bottom of every insight. E-E-A-T maps almost directly to what AI engines look for.

5. Measurement. You cannot manage what you don't measure. Share-of-model is the output metric. We track it monthly across the five major engines; the methodology is open-sourced below.

What to stop doing

Stop writing 4,000-word thought leadership that makes one argument. Break it into extractable sections with real subheads.

Stop burying statistics inside prose. Pull them into callouts, comparison tables, or quick-answer blocks where LLMs can extract them.

Stop publishing undated content. Every insight, every page, every methodology needs a visible Last updated.

Stop gating insights behind forms. AI engines can't cite what they can't reach. Ungated published content beats lead-gen-locked PDFs for share-of-model every time.

The 30-day GEO audit

Week 1: crawl your site, flag pages without dateModified, pages without FAQ schema, pages without Author schema, and pages with walls of prose and no extractable structure.

Week 2: add FAQ sections to your 10 highest-traffic pages, using exact-match query phrasing from your Google Search Console "queries" report.

Week 3: build a 30-prompt share-of-model baseline across GPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, and Copilot. Record the baseline. (NUUN publishes an open-source template for this.)

Week 4: fix the top 5 pages with the worst extractability (wall-of-prose without subheads, no schema, no sources). Refresh and re-publish with updated timestamps.

Is GEO different from SEO?
GEO optimizes for citation by AI engines; SEO optimizes for ranking on traditional search. There is massive overlap — clean headers, schema markup, fast pages, and authoritative content serve both. GEO adds: citation-worthy data, extractable structure, and share-of-model measurement.
How do AI engines decide which sources to cite?
Each engine uses a different retrieval and ranking stack, but the recurring patterns are: (1) traditional search authority signals still drive the candidate set, (2) citation-worthy content (stats, lists, tables, FAQs) earns higher extraction rates, (3) freshness matters more than in traditional search, (4) first-party data and disclosed methodology rank higher than opinion.
What is share-of-model and how do I measure it?
Share-of-model is the percentage of times an AI engine cites your brand in response to a representative prompt set. To measure: define 30–50 prompts your buyers would use, run them monthly across 5 engines, log citation count and position. We publish a methodology template you can adopt directly.
Does AI visibility come from the same pages as SEO visibility?
Largely yes. 74% of AI citations we track in 2025–2026 come from pages that also rank in the top 10 organic. The exceptions: listicle-format comparisons rank disproportionately well in AI citations, and methodology pages (how we measure X) get cited more often than their traditional rank suggests.
Should I submit my content to ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity?
Not in a form like Google Search Console. What you control: robots.txt allow/disallow for AI bots (GPTBot, Google-Extended, PerplexityBot, ClaudeBot, etc.), llms.txt for AI-specific content hints, and schema markup for extractability. We recommend allowing all major crawlers unless you have a compelling reason not to.
How often do AI engines re-crawl?
Varies by engine and source authority. Perplexity re-queries live for many prompts, so freshness is immediate. ChatGPT web retrieval is near-real-time. ChatGPT's training corpus updates intermittently. Gemini retrieves live for most queries. Copilot uses Bing's crawl cadence. Practical implication: dateModified matters, and refreshing content quarterly is the floor.
What content formats earn the highest AI citation rates?
Listicles and comparison tables (74% of citations in our sample), methodology explanations, and FAQ pages. Pure opinion essays earn the lowest citation rates. Any content that answers a specific question, with sources, and with structured data, outperforms prose-heavy thought leadership.
Can I pay to improve AI citation rates?
No. Unlike paid search, there are currently no paid placement mechanisms in any major AI engine. All gains come from content quality, structure, and authority.
